Epic biking in the South Chilcotin

July 14, 2009

Last weekend some friends and I packed into our cars and headed inland with our bikes in search of some good riding, and boy did we ever find it. We arrived at Tyaughton lake in the Spruce Lake park around midnight and setup a pretty quick camp for the night. In the morning we packed up and headed out, gear on our backs and started the long climb up to the Taylor Basin Cabin.

The day was about 9 hours, including the two mountain passes we had to climb up - the highest one, Windy Pass at a height of 2,200 meters. What an awesome day. Going from normal forest around the 1,400 meter mark up through sub-alpine, into alpine and back down (quickly!) the other side back to sub-alpine, and then right back up again. The final descent from Windy Pass was worth every minute of the climb, windy down in seemingly endless single track through the valley to Spruce Lake below where we setup camp for the night.

The next day was no less epic as we had another 25km of single track down to the second car which we parked at about 700 meters of elevation, in about 5 hours. Total ride time for the whole trip was about 6 hours, and distance covered just over 50km. Doing it again next year? Definitely. Perhaps for longer!

I lugged my camera along and took a whole bunch of pictures, you can check out the slideshow on flickr. Hez took a bunch of shots as well with Eric's point and shoot! Both me and eric had little helmet cams so we have some videos of the trip as well - check 'em out!
